JADESTORM SHAMSID-DEEN, founder of SWIYYAH in Laveen, Maricopa, Arizona is this week’s Inventing Woman. This is her interview:
Tell us about your invention?I invented a new hospital gown design and a herbal Antiviral Facemask
What does problem does it solve?
The Gown provides an fashionable quick access to the upper torso while keeping you modest wearing it. The face is considered a medical device hecause of its herbal ingrediants with clinical research showing the plants destroys a virus at contact.
Both garments help recycle the water on earth, eliminate garment to body contact exposure of toxic chemicals, stops the use of fossil fuels melting plastic into polyester, and have active potent medicinal herbs with anti-inflammation, anti-microbial, anti-viral properties.
What was the inspiration for your invention? The Gown – Seeing my Father in a gown at the hospital. That day showed to much that I go got embarressed. He was do frustrated, he was trying to cover himself up and tell me at the same time to redesign it.
As for the Anti-viral Facemask, I thought about all 9 years of singlely in America helping to stop the use of toxic, known cancer causing chemicals on wearables. Then i thought about how so many people are putting conventional cotton on their face and breathing it in. Sad. I began selling the face mask immediately from left over material pieces from 2017 to students working for Walmart. Its truly inspiring to help fight and raise farmers in this industry. They’ve suffered years of unfairness in crops trying to take care of their families. Natural alternative plants help give me relief to many species..
At what stage in the invention process are you?Patented and Patent-Pending advanced material designs and ideas. Serving my community with a viable product and, seeking capital investment for design packaging, machine purchases, stock inventory and supplies, marketing, salaries.
What is the number one goal you have with regards to your invention?Educating myself and the community about nature’s healthy plant that’s grown in harmony with our planet and understanding the respect for its culture for us all to survive.

What has been the greatest challenge getting your idea from your head to something tangible? Not having healthy raw materials accessible to me immediately like convention toxic textiles are today.
How did or are you funding the development of your invention?I worked part-time for years and reinvest everything. I can not meet my client, go on sales calls or work, due to the COVID-19 and having to practice CDC’s social distance requirements.

I owned my own in-home daycare facility and worked upto midnight taking care of children. The funding particially funded my education for 3 years. I walked as an A.A.S. graduate in 2006 on the Dean’s list, and Honors list, holding numerous recommendation letters for scholarships and funding given to me from several Professor’s, from Phoenix College and Arizona State University.
In 2008 I found myself becoming the oldest female in the State out of my Father’s children. He had livability challenges so I cared and my income with him. My income was only $800 a month with four children to raise. It lead me to stop investing into my vision of owning a fashion company.
